Nova Scotia Salmon Association Summer Field Researcher
The Nova Scotia Salmon Association is a not-for profit conservation organization, governed by an active Board of Directors. The NSSA has two main project areas: the West River Sheet Harbour Acid Rain Mitigation project and its NSLC Adopt-A-Stream program. The West River Project is monitoring the effects of liming dosing on aquatic life. The NSLC Adopt A Stream program is a community-based watershed stewardship program with a particular focus on restoring fish habitat through in-stream and riparian restoration projects. When not in the field, program staff work from home-based offices, communicating via phone, email and periodic meetings.
Job Description: For the first six weeks the field researcher will be doing fish monitoring work on the West River Project. The researcher will be based at a field camp during this period and travel to sites to complete various fish sampling requirements. The second part of the summer will entail working on various aspects of the NSLC Adopt A Stream program, including stream surveying, temperature monitoring and habitat restoration. The position involves travel to and work at a number of locations through the province as well as some database management and mapping work and other writing assignments. The successful student will be able to work independently , be a self starter, flexible and organized and, willing to regularly travel away for up to 5 days at a time. The field researcher will be working under the direction of the Program managers, in conjunction the Aquatic biologist and other field staff. Training will be provided.
Field activities:
· Daily monitoring of fish survey gear including a smolt wheel, fike nets and sampling as required for a period of 6 weeks
· Conduct stream habitat surveys, general water quality monitoring, invertebrate sampling
· Assist with management of thermal monitoring program
· Assist with application, monitoring and research of fish habitat restoration methodologies
· Contribute to watershed habitat plans for community groups
Eligibility Requirements:
· Returning to full-time post secondary studies in Sept 2010 in the field of biology, environmental studies, or related discipline
· Valid Drivers License
· Access to a vehicle
· Willingness to work outdoors, handle live fish
· Access to a Computer and internet
Desired skills, Experience and Aptitudes
· Experience conducting field surveys, biological sampling methods, recording data, and transferring data to spread sheet databases;
· Surveying skills and GPS/ GIS experience an asset;
· Enjoy working outdoors in sometimes remote locations, in streams and potentially from boats
· Willing to work a flexible schedule

Length of the position: 18 weeks starting April 25 through August 26, 2011
Wage: $12/hours 35 hours/ week.
