A short while back I was made aware of a site member that had some fishing gear, reels in particular, to give away to someone in need. I contacted this member and when I mentioned I had a few kids at my school who would love to have anything fishing related, he quickly agree to give me what he had left.

I took an enjoyable trip to Truro to pick the items up. As outdoor people often do , we got to talking and he invited me to his home. Once there we shared a mutaul love for guitars, music, fishing, family, bows and all sorts of stuff. It was amazing to realise how much we actually had in common.

As topics came and went he picked up on fly tying. Upon mentioning that we sometimes do that in school with the kids, using vice grips taped to the desks, he torn into a box of fishing gear he had packed away and handed me two fly tying vices and the offer of anything else the kids might need that he could help with.

As I drove home I began to think about what I had stored in my garage at home. So, after a bit of looking I came up with two more reels and an older rod. I then took a run to a local store and bought two more inexpensive rods to go with the reels he had given me. I now had 5 fishing set ups, including a fly rod/reel and another reel with a very interesting history that he had shared with me: and I, in turn have shared with the new owner.

So, as the kids left the school today , full of smiles and excitement, five kids (3 boys and 2 girls) left with the anticipation of spending many an hour fishing some of the local brooks and rivers with their 'new to them' fishing outfits. They were one excited bunch of kids!!

So, thanks again to this generous lover of the outdoors and children. I am convinced you have set in motion the beginnings of many years of fishing fun for 5 very grateful kids. You have also made me look at the things I have stored around my garage , gathering dust, in a different way. If I find anymore fishing gear that is gathering dust or being offerred for a reasonable price at yardsales this summer...I think I know just what to do with it.

Something to think about folks....the next time you trip over or move for the hundreth time those rods and fishing things you just don't use anymore!!

Butch

PS.. When you get tired of that old, cheap guitar, remember me. I'll take it off your hands just out of the kindness of my heart. Perhaps when I come up to shoot one of those nuisance deer for ya!! ;)

PPS Title was supposed to be 'Surplus to Smiles' but I have no idea how to fix it!!

Fantastic! I hope the kids get hooked and keep the tradition alive. If you want to fix your spelling go to to your post, click edit, and change it, simple as that.

It won't let me fix the title? Or at least I can't seem to be able to. I can edit everything else but not the title.

Thanks,
Butch
